David Wayne
Mason
October 4, 1948 – November 26, 2018
David Wayne Mason, longtime Cushing resident passed peacefully from this life on November 26, 2018 surrounded by family at their beloved farm.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home, 800 S. Linwood, Cushing, OK.
David was born to proud parents Woodrow and Christine Ella (Goodman) Mason on October 4, 1948 at "The Brethren's Camp" near Farmersville, CA. He grew up in California graduating High School in Tulare, CA. Graduation night he met the love of his life, Fleeta Kay Greenfield and it was truly love at first sight. Only five months later they were married on October 6, 1967. After six short months of marriage, David was drafted in 1968 into the Vietnam war serving two years in the U.S. Army. David and Kay were stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia while 3 times David received news he would be sent to Vietnam; but God would deliver each time as he did many times for David throughout his life.
After his honorable discharge, the family moved back to California where David worked as a tile setter for 2 years. The family then moved to Cushing, Oklahoma where David went to work for Uncle Elvis learning to be a brick and rock mason. His skills quickly increased and through his hard work, solid reputation, and God's provision he never had to look for work as he was known as "one of the best around."
David loved to visit and while speaking in a crowd wasn't really his thing, he always welcomed a one on one conversation. He could talk for hours about guns, reloading, elk hunting in Colorado, deer hunting, blacksmithing or any other number of his mountain man hobbies.
David and Kay were blessed with three children, Toby Grant, Bryan David, and Deonna Kay. Family was the light of his life and he loved being a faithful husband, attentive father, and caring grandfather. David loved children, and he was known by many for his boots, hat, and white beard. He would often be mistaken as Santa by children when he was out, and they delighted to know that "Santa wears cowboy boots" when he wasn't dressed in red.
David instilled many values in his children and grandchildren's lives, but especially those of being a hard worker and pushing yourself to achieve your dreams. David's dream was to own a farm and horses and the last six years of his life he spent with Kay on their 80-acre farm in Cushing. Even in his final days, he loved being able to look out the bedroom window and watch his horses grazing in the fields.
David is survived by his wife, Kay of the home; son, Toby Mason; grandchildren, Bryce Mason and wife Jackie, and Tyler Mason; sisters, Carolyn Smith and husband Davie, and Marilyn Mendonca and husband Manuel; as well as many extended family and friends.
He is preceded in death by two children, Bryan David and Deonna Kay; brother, Melvin Mason; and many dear friends.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 29, 2018 at Church of the Firstborn, Cushing, Oklahoma. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 with family present to greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
