EMILY ANNE (BARRETT-WALTON) MOORELAND
Emily Anne Mooreland was born November 4, 1940 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma to Charles Barrett and Iva Doxey. She was raised and cherished by her dear Uncle and Aunt, Clarence and Luticia (Aunt Tishie) Walton. She attended Douglass School from Kindergarten through her sophomore year of High School, transferring in 1957 to Bartlesville College High. She was a member of the second racially-integrated class of graduates there. She entered Langston University in 1958 and received a Bachelor of Arts, Music Education in 1962.
Anne, as she was affectionately called by most, had a wonderful childhood, always joined at the hip to her younger brother of the home, William Ray Brown, known as "Bobo" throughout the west side community. She was active in Girl Scouts, school choirs, majorettes, and marching band, she also belonged to several junior social clubs and took piano lessons. As an active member of Greater First Baptist Church, she taught Sunday School and participated in the choir. Anne was gifted pianist and songstress, continuing to express these talents as a featured soloist of the Langston University Choir. She was awarded the title "Most Talented Female" by her Senior Class.
Upon college graduation, she began her first teaching position at Booker T. Washington School, Cushing, Oklahoma. She quickly gained her career-long status as, "Favorite Teacher" among her students. In 1963, she accepted a position in Cushing Public Schools teaching at Wilson Elementary.
Later in 1963, she was married in Bartlesville to Ronald Eugene Mooreland of Cushing. This union, was blessed in 1964 with one son, Donald Michael. They resided in Cushing until 1971, when Anne relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma. There she taught Music, Art and Physical Education for 22 years, retiring in 1994.
Emily Anne enjoyed her retirement, continuing to serve in several capacities at Friendship Church and Praise Miracle and Deliverance Ministries. She expanded her jazz fusion record collection, spent time with her two grandchildren, family, and friends, attended Douglassaires Reunions, and of course, ate lots of soul food—especially, if spicy! She was quick to share her encouraging words, sassiness, laughter and radiant smile with all who she came in contact. Anne was a diligent prayer warrior and avid Bible reader. She always knew the right scripture to share at the opportune time.
Anne ran a courageous and honorable 9-month, post-surgical stretch of her journey. She is survived by her son, Donald (Donnie) Mooreland of Oklahoma City, OK; brother, William Ray Brown (wife Sherry) of Fresno, CA; sister Ida Mae Williams of Inglewood, CA; brother Clarence Lucy of Sun Valley, CA; granddaughter, Rachel Mooreland of Chicago, IL; grandson, Miles Mooreland of Upland, CA; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and many cherished "in-law" siblings. She will be missed, but always remembered with a smile.
