Emma Ronita
Moore
March 7, 1945 – August 2, 2024
Emma Ronita Moore, born March 7, 1945, in Cushing, Oklahoma, to the parentage of Gracey and Ruby Moore. Emma was the youngest of twelve children born to this union. Educated in the segregated Cushing Public Schools, Emma graduated from Booker T. Washington High School where her father was caretaker of the campus that he proudly kept white glove spotless. Through her seven plus decades of life and living, Emma remained a tried and true, "Cushingite."
On the evening of August 2, 2024, in Edmond, Oklahoma, Emma was found faithful as God called her from this earthly home to her new home in eternity. Because of His grace, Emma was surrounded by close family and her devoted and loving son, Michael.
Like many in her generation, Emma left the small town of her origin and relocated to
Oklahoma City, where she lived with an older brother and his young family. Before heading West, Emma attended a local business college where she honed her secretarial skills, excelling in the abbreviated writing method of Shorthand while developing her business and professional acumen.
In the mid-1960's Emma arrived in Los Angeles, California where she was welcomed into the home of her loving aunt and uncle, the late Hattie and Spencer Wiley. Emma immersed herself into the rapid pace and lifestyle of Los Angeles, quickly finding employment in downtown fashionable department stores and as a teller in several institutions of banking. Emma then had opportunities to further her education and matriculated through Sawyer Business College, West Coast College and several other institutions of higher learning and professional development.
It was at an early age that Emma accepted Christ into her life. In Cushing on Sundays, Emma and her twin sister, Mary were often bussed to a predominantly caucasian church uptown. Missionaries would often visit and fellowship with the pair at their family home. Once in Los Angeles, her aunt Hattie introduced her to Macedonia Baptist Church where she later joined the burgeoning congregation under the leadership of Rev. S. O. J. Evans. Emma remained a faithful and fruitful member with Macedonia Baptist Church until her passing.
For over seven decades, Jesus Christ and His church remained at the very center of Emma's life. Upon joining Macedonia, Emma became a member of the Sanctuary Choir under the direction of the late Fanny Smith. Emma sang alongside her aunt Hattie and a close family friend, Imogene Hawkins. Years later Emma, would serve as choir president and hold other elected positions. When Emma was not serving as president, she was undergirding the newly elected president by providing guidance, support and encouragement.
Emma was also a faithful member of the Macedonia Baptist Church Inspirational Choir, under the direction of Olivette Evens Hester. She was a prominent member of the tenor section and served as choir president for numerous years. Throughout her five decades of service, she also held the office of choir chaplain and corresponding secretary. Emma assisted in securing lodging for the choir's annual retreat at the American Baptist Thousands Pines Christian Camp and Conference Center. Each year Emma, worked with the choir director and organizational leadership in securing musical dress colors and designs. Emma was instrumental in her representation of the choir when securing new choir robes from local robe designers and manufacturers. Emma was often one of the leading patron fundraisers for the choir's annual musical. Each year Emma was faithful in creating extensive Patron's list that accompanied the annual musical program.
Emma faithfully volunteered at the Macedonia House of Hope. She was a member of the Hattie Bass Circle, a faithful attendee of the Tuesday morning Bible Study group and served as the Macedonia Baptist Church Clerk in addition to serving on the pastoral search committee.
In recent years, Emma was a leading member of the Macedonia Baptist Church Bereavement Committee. Because of her fellowship with church members and their loved ones, she was called up by numerous families to write and present the official resolution on behalf of the church during a loved one's service.
Emma was dedicated to the cause of Christ through the Macedonia Baptist Church, Los Angeles. However, Emma also fellowshipped with Athens Baptist Church, Los Angeles, CA. (Rev. Dr. Gregory C. Morris, Pastor) and Mt. Gaza Missionary Baptist Church, Compton, CA. (Rev. Fred Houston, Sr. Pastor.)
Professionally, Emma's contributions are numerous. A large portion of her professional career was spent in the Southern California aerospace industry. Following brief employment with the University of Southern California, Emma worked at Rockwell International, a major American manufacturing company involved in aircraft, and the space industry. Emma remained in the competitive aerospace industry from the mid-1970's to the early 90's. While at Rockwell, initially Emma was a part of the clerical and secretarial pool. However, Emma would quickly seize the opportunity for advancement within the conglomerate. In the 1980's with additional training from M.I.T., Emma became a certified draftsperson, working on the Space Shuttle Payload Bay. Emma was a fluent draftsperson and later became skilled in C.A.D. (Computer Aided Drafting). In the early 2000's Emma retired from Los Angeles Unified School District as a Senior Secretary.
After her career in the various industries, Emma was employed by the House of Winston Mortuary. It was here at the mortuary she received training from both James and Mary Lousie Winston to became a skilled counselor, sensitive to the needs and desires of families memorializing loved ones.
Emma is survived by her devoted and loving son, Michael G. Reel of Los Angeles, three sisters, Odette Scobey of Oklahoma City, OK, Marva Morris and Laura Lou Pierson of Cushing, OK, and one brother, Erskine Moore of San Diego, CA., a host of cousins, nephews, nieces and close friends nationwide.
