Fred
Britton
November 16, 1935 – June 23, 2024
Fred Preston Britton was born to Bill and Thelma Britton on November 16, 1935 in a farmhouse near Avery, Oklahoma. He was the second of five boys. During the depression, the family moved to Olathe, Colorado in about 1937, to work in the produce farms. The family moved back to the Parkland, Oklahoma area in 1941. Fred attended the two-room schoolhouse in Parkland through the 8th grade when he quit to go to work in the oilfield. He earned his GED several years later.
Fred, along with many young men from Agra, would go to Cushing to "drag" Main Street and meet girls. When he was about 19 and she was 16, he met Barbara Combs in Cushing and began dating her. They married in her mother's house in Cushing on October 5, 1956, by Bro. Bob Tibbett, and began their marriage in Cushing. A year later they moved to Oklahoma City and Fred worked in construction, running a dozer building I-35 through Oklahoma City.
On January 12, 1958, Fred and Barbara began their walk with the Lord, being baptized in Colby's Pond in Oklahoma City by his grandfather Bro. Fred Herring. Fred was drafted into the Army in July 1958. He did training in San Antonio, Texas, then moved to Ft. Hood, Texas, where they moved a small trailer and Barbara moved there to be with him. In 1959, Fred was sent to Iceland for a year. This time away from home and family was a time that Fred learned to dig into the Bible and began his love of reading the Word of God.
Fred was discharged from the Army in 1960 and they moved to a farm near Agra. After 5 years of marriage, Karena was born in that small farmhouse in October of 1961. Fred was called back into the Army shortly after, during the Cuban Missile Crisis and was stationed in Louisiana. After discharge, Fred and the family moved back to the farm near Agra. Kent was born in September 1964. Like many brethren in the area, Fred began a dairy farm when Kent was about 2-½ years old. This was a family endeavor with Barbara helping milk, the kids feeding calves and helping get up the cows. Fred employed many young brothers to help with the dairy farm.
That was a hard way to make a living and economics eventually required them to sell the dairy in October of 1972. Like many farmers at the time, even after the sale, they were in big debt - they owed over $180,000 at 18% interest. But, the integrity that Fred had wouldn't let him default on that money. He paid every cent back to the bank with a lot of hard work. He hauled hay, farmed peanuts, and had cattle. He bought a farm by Perkins near the river. However, they decided to sell that farm and build a new house. That was also a family endeavor and they moved into the new house in 1975.
Fred continued to take his family to church when there was meeting and began his ministry. He began a trucking company around this time. On July 30, 1978, Fred was ordained as an Elder at the Parkland church along with Bros. Alva Herrmann, Gordon Bond, and his brother Keith Britton. In November 1978, the family gained a wonderful blessing when Tara was born. In 1996, Fred decided to sell his trucking company and retire. Retirement didn't stick very well with Fred, as he loved to work. Fred and Barbara became grandparents, and he loved that role. He was a role model for them and baptized most of his grandchildren into the Faith. He was also the fun grandpa, riding horses and going 4-wheeling with them. On April 8, 2014, Barbara suddenly passed away after 57 years of marriage.
Fred was lost. However, God had a new plan for his life. Fred met Almyra Greenfield and they were married on January 31, 2015. They enjoyed drinking coffee in the morning while watching the cows. They bought a camper and enjoyed going to church camps and just getting away at the lake for the weekend. Fred loved searching Purple Wave, an auction site, for vehicles. They enjoyed many trips together, picking up the treasures he found. Two trips to Iowa for a car they hauled back on a car dolly, which squealed and made noise the whole way even taking it through the middle of Charleston, South Carolina; another picking up a Chevy truck with Jeff and Sholie. They traveled to so many places, including trips to Colorado visiting Luke and Tiffany, enjoying the sites and visiting with brethren wherever they went. Even though they didn't have many years together, they took loving care of each other up until the very end.
Fred is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Barbara, brothers Don and Keith, and great-grandson Aiden Newport. He is survived by wife Almyra of the home, daughters Karena (Terry) Sarber and Tara (Joey) Wittman and son Kent all of Agra. Grandchildren Aaron Britton, Stephanie Toles, Tiffany (Luke) Newport, Nathan (Ashlynn) Britton, Tyler (Brittany) Penrod, and Isaiah and Hailey Wittman; great grand-children Landon, Quinn, Cooper and Parker Britton, Lakelyn Penrod and Connor Newport; brothers, Jim (Sharon) Britton and David Britton. He is survived by stepchildren Sholie (Jeff) Pruitt, Brandon (Lori) Greenfield, KaeLoni (Timothy) Hamm and Hunter (Mandy) Greenfield, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Fred was a friend to many and loved his church family and extended family.
