Obituary

Henrietta Scott Massey (Mahweta), fullblood Sac and Fox tribal member, passed away on October 29, 2023 at the age of 87. Henrietta was born September 29, 1936 to Henry Scott and Mamie Butler Scott. She was preceded in death by her parents, all of her siblings, and her two children Raymond Massey and Sandra Massey. She is survived by her beloved granddaughter Rosemary Massey, her adopted children, and many other relatives from the Sauk, Meskwaki, and Kickapoo tribes.

Henrietta was a member of the Wolf clan. She was a lifelong participant in traditional ceremonies and speaker of the Sauk language. Throughout her adult life she served the Sac and Fox Nation in many capacities from being a tribal official to working with the Sauk Language Department to serving as a Gaming Commissioner. She worked closely with her daughter Sandra Massey on historic preservation and served on the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act committee for many years. She loved Sauk language, history, and culture and devoted much of her life to trying to teach and preserve them.

Traditional services will be held at the Sac and Fox Nation beginning Wednesday, November 1, 2023 with viewing starting at 3:00 p.m. and tribal rites to follow. A graveside will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, November 2, 2023 at Euchee Valley Memorial Park, Cushing, Oklahoma with Sam Spang officiating.
