J. Lyall Smith, passed away peacefully, at home with family, in Broken Arrow, OK, on November 19, 2020, at the age of 89, following a courageous battle with Parkinson's.
Burial at Euchee Valley Memorial Park, Cushing, Oklahoma was followed by a small memorial service at the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, with the Reverend John Malget officiating. The family, due to COVID-19, regrets that so many friends and business associates could not be included in J. Lyall's memorial service.
J. Lyall was born September 10, 1931 in Enid, OK to the late Eugene H. Smith and Dorothy (McCammon) Smith. His family moved to Cushing in 1938, where J. Lyall was raised and educated. J. Lyall graduating from Cushing High School in 1949, and graduated from Phillips University in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science dual major in Accounting and Marketing/Management. In 1952 he married Mary Louise (Pancoast) Smith, his high school sweetheart. They have been married 68 years.
Immediately after graduation, J. Lyall was drafted into the U.S. Army and spent time at Ft. Riley, KS, Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Indianapolis, IN, and Ft. Jackson, Columbia, SC. Upon discharge, he returned to Cushing, OK in 1955 and sold Ford autos with his father, at Gene Smith Ford.
In 1957, J. Lyall became employed by Carter Oil Co. (now Exxon), Tulsa, OK in the Treasury Department. While in Tulsa, he attended night school at The University of Tulsa, working towards a Master's Degree in Accounting, but was then transferred by Carter Oil Company to Durango, CO in 1959.
The family returned to Cushing in 1963, where J. Lyall entered into business with Roscoe Pancoast (Mary Louise's father). They formed the Pancoast & Smith Insurance Agency and Pancoast-Smith Realtors.
During his lifetime, J. Lyall's interests included: band, baseball, lifeguarding, fishing, camping, golfing and stamp collecting.
He was a long-time active member of the First Christian Church, serving as Deacon, Elder, Treasurer, and he also served on various committees. He was active in the Rotary Club, Cushing Board of Realtors, and served as Treasurer on the Boy Scouts board.
J. Lyall was a kind and loving husband and father to his wife and children.
Survivors include: his wife, Mary Louise Smith; daughters, Pam Truelove and husband Terry, Broken Arrow, OK, Marsha Carruthers, Cushing, OK, and Terri Combs and husband Don, Tulsa, OK; grandchildren, Andrew Carruthers and wife Jena (and their children Asher Lyle and Sloane Becca) Oak Park, CA, Travis Carruthers, Denver, CO, Brian Carruthers, San Diego, CA, Kara Carruthers, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Matt Truelove and wife Jennifer (and their daughter, Cora), Tulsa, OK. He was also survived by his brother, Warren D. Smith, wife Roberta, Bixby, OK, their children and grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Memorials may be made to: First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, Fellowship Hall Project, 300 E. Moses St., Cushing, OK 74023, or Grace Hospice of Oklahoma, LLC, 6218 S. Lewis Ave., Tulsa, OK 74136, in lieu of flowers.
Services were held under the direction of Palmer-Marler Funeral Home in Cushing.
