James Charlie Brooks, 65, of Cushing, Oklahoma, passed away on Sunday, March 1, 2026 at his home in Cushing, Oklahoma.
James (Jake) was born on January 22, 1961, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to John and Vivian Brooks number 7 in a line of 11 children. He spent much of his life on the farm raising crops and animals. James enjoyed working in the hayfield teaching many people the art of farming. He also worked in the woods cutting firewood and later pulpwood. He got the biggest kick teaching his daughter how to use a chainsaw. James with the help of his 1st wife, daughter and grandchildren built two houses, the 1st one a 2 story 4 bedroom 2 bath with the largest kitchen big enough for family celebrations we teased him the whole church family could fit comfortably. James greatest joy was spending time with his family, whom he loved dearly.
He is survived by his siblings: Sandy and Charles Starks of Wanette, OK; Vivian and Ray Phillips of Vian, Ok; John (Fuzz) and Lisa Brooks of Gore, OK; Teresa and Justin Workman of Gore, OK; Lula and Steve Garvin of Akins, OK; Carla Stewart of Shreveport, LA; and Shawn and Danny Cook of Vian, OK.
James is also survived by his partner Celena Bailey Brooks of the home. His children: Alan Morton, William Morton, and Paula Kirkendoll, his grandchildren: Johnny Pogue, Kenneth Pogue, and Jennifer Pogue, Andrew Morton, Aaron Morton and wife Patricia, and Chase Morton
He leaves behind his cherished great-grandchildren: Trenton Day, Lexi Day, Trinity Pogue, William Pogue, Ethan Kitchen, Ebony Pogue, Dashia Pogue, Jewelz Kitchen, Jade Morton, Drew Morton, Abigale Morton and Ashely Morton;
His great-great-grandchildren: Mia Pogue, Ashlynn Kitchen, and Jacob Kitchen. He is also survived by multiple nieces and nephews. James never met a stranger and will be missed by many who knew and loved him.
James was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Barbara and Jim Rich of Chickasha, Ok; Peggy and Don Whorton of Conway Ar; Johnny Brooks III of St Louis, Ok; Billy Joe and Pat Brooks of Vian, Ok; his first wife, Edora Brooks of Summerfield, Ok; his grandsons, Kendal James Pogue and son-in-law Jacob Kirkendoll both of Cushing, Ok
James will be remembered for a life filled with work, enjoyment of the outdoors and his love of family. He was happiest tinkering with equipment troubleshooting why it was not working and bringing it back to life. He is known for his patience, quiet wisdom, and stubborn dedication to all of these things.
