Obituary

Joseph Byington, longtime Cushing resident, passed from this life on Wednesday, February 5, 2020 in Tulsa, OK surrounded by family.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at Hope Church, Cushing, OK.  Family will greet friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday evening.    Graveside service will follow at Zion Baptist Church Cemetery at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, February 8, 2020.

Joseph was born on March 19, 1950 to Jesse and Lucille (West) Byington in Claremore, OK.  Joseph grew up in McAlester, graduating from McAlester High School in 1968.  While in school, Joseph was very active in sports, especially football.  Upon graduating, Joseph attended school at Okmulgee Tech.  He began working for Shell Pipeline and worked his way up to an operator.  He stayed with Shell pipeline for 30 years.  On April 26, 2002, Joseph married the love of his life, Shirley Lockwood in Eureka Springs, AR.

Joseph had a very active lifestyle.  He enjoyed waking up early either fishing or getting on the golf course.  He was part of the adult Volleyball and Softball leagues in Cushing.  Later he began coaching youth softball in Cushing.  Joseph was part of the Choctaw Nation and attended Pow Wows, taking part of his heritage.  Joseph would always put his family first.  He loved watching all the grandkids in their sporting events.

Joseph was a kind and loving man.  He will be missed by all who knew him.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Shirley Byington, of the home; daughters Stacy Bogle and husband Ron of Cushing, Michelle Childress of Springdale, AR., Jenny Lynn Adams and husband Jody of Poteau, Crystal Cortez and husband Jose of Madill, Stacy King of Bonham, TX., brother Jeff Byington and wife Marilyn of Coalgate, sister-in-law Cathy Byington of Krebs, grandchildren Justin Bogle, Jessica Shoemaker and husband Blake, Cashia Baker and husband Briar, Billy Ted Childress and wife Lee Ann, Mesa Childress, Callie Childress, Jacques Adams, Tyler Bruce and Micha, Marshall Scott and Kiera, Caleb Pittenger, Kaylee Pittenger, Joni Laster and husband Seth, three great grandchildren.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Ike Byington, Lumpsy Byington, Beatrice Walker and Sharon July.
