Mona
Tull
May 16, 1932 – January 23, 2020
Mona Carol (Wheaton) Tull, was born on May 16, 1932 in Oilton, Oklahoma. At the age of 87, she passed away peacefully in her home near Jennings, Oklahoma, in the early morning hours of January 23, 2020.
Mona lived a full and happy life. She was known for smiling, laughing, and whistling while she worked – popping her chewing gum – and was often reading a good book. The past few years, dealing with Alzheimer's, were difficult, frustrating, and confusing – and we thank God that she is now at rest and in a better place.
Mona lived many places while growing up in Osage, Pawnee, and Creek Counties of Oklahoma (Glencoe, Pawnee, Pawhuska, Wynona, Hominy, Cleveland, Jennings, to name a few). During the depression her family, like many others, traveled to California looking for work. She said it was a great adventure, but after living and working in an orchard for a short time, she was happy to return home to Oklahoma. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jennings. She graduated from Jennings High School in 1950, and went to work at a bank in Ponca City, before marrying Dale Elmo Tull on February 3, 1951. Together, they made their home southwest of Jennings, bought a farm, built a house, and raised four children with love and kindness. They enjoyed square dancing on Saturday nights. Many times, over the years, they opened their home to others who needed their assistance. They had a great love and celebrated their 50 th wedding anniversary together in 2001 before Dale passed away in 2004 (since then she has missed him greatly).
Mona was a very intelligent woman – she once took the Mensa IQ exam. She didn't want to become a member of the Mensa Society, she just wanted to prove she could pass the test (which she did). She was a voracious reader and loved to pull the dictionary out to solve a debate about the origin, meaning, or spelling of words. She served as a living encyclopedia for her children and grand-children ("ask Mom" or "ask Grandma" was a regular saying).
After working as a stay-at-home mom for most of her children's lives, Mona worked on the Cimarron Turnpike as a tollbooth operator (one of the first women to work in this position – she was fearless), and later as a part-time rural mail carrier in Jennings. She also loved to travel. She saw much of the U.S. (including Hawaii); parts of Canada; and Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Scotland, Greece, and Amsterdam. She went on several cruises, including one through the Panama Canal, the Caribbean, the Greek Isles, and a river cruise through Europe.
And of course, Mona loved going to auctions, yard sales and flea markets. She was a long-time attendee at the Saturday night auction in Jennings, and always enjoyed finding a great buy. She also loved dogs – sometimes to her family's dismay. Her husband said when he passed away he wanted to come back as her dog. She enjoyed wearing hats and purple shoes – eating sunflower seeds, black walnut ice cream, and fish sandwiches – and watching television game shows and antique roadshow.
