Obituary

Raymond George Ewen was born on November 14, 1948 to George and Esther Ewen in Cushing, Oklahoma. Raymond, better known as Ray, graduated from Cushing High School in 1967.

Following graduation Ray was drafted into the Army on March 18, 1969. He served in the Vietnam war as a US Army Specialist 4, 1st Infantry (The Big Red One), Troop E, 15th Cavalry (armored tanks). He was honorably discharged on March 17, 1971 and received the Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart.

After the war, he returned to Cushing and caught the eye of Sally Jo Martin. Sally Jo was born November 17th, 1955 to Lawrence and Dorothy Martin in Cushing, Oklahoma. Sally graduated from Cushing High School in 1973. There are many stories about how Ray was the "bad boy" who Sally Jo couldn't keep her eyes off of. Ray would go to the Steer Inn where Sally worked and would order a medium coke in a large cup so he could fill the rest in with a little something extra while they were dragging main.

Ray and Sally were married on December 23, 1976. A few short years later, their family grew with the birth of their first child, Travis. Shortly thereafter, Jennifer joined the family. Ray gave them the nicknames of "Bud" and "Rue"  which they proudly still claim. Ray and Sally both loved watching their children play sports through the years and were elated when they both added grandchildren to the family! Ray spent his years driving a truck, hauling crude oil and providing for his family that he loved. Sally earned her Nursing Home Administrator's license in 1995. In November 2004 Sally was involved in an auto accident that changed life as they knew it. Through life's trials and tribulations, they never wavered from their vows: to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part. Sally Jo passed from this earth on May 31, 2024 and Ray joined her on September 24, 2024 where they are now holding hands and reminiscing about their lives together. One thing that is for certain, they loved each other until the very end.

Ray and Sally are survived by their son, Travis Ewen and wife, Jillian; daughter, Jennifer Meier; five grandchildren Alexis, Peighton, and Hudson Ewen and Gunner and Gattlon Meier. Survivors also include brother, Jerome Ewen and wife Linda; sister Juliana and husband Lothar; brother Tom Martin and wife Judi, along with several nephews, nieces, cousins, and countless loved ones.

Ray and Sally were preceded in death by their parents, George and Esther Ewen and Lawrence and Dorothy Martin; brothers, Robert Ewen, Jim Martin, and Hank Martin; sisters, Adeline Peiper and Judy Sims, along with several other special friends and family who welcomed them into their heavenly home.

The family will host a viewing for Ray on Sunday, September 29, 2024, from 1-5pm at Palmer Marler Funeral Home in Cushing, OK.
