Vickie D.
Chambers
December 11, 1956 – April 14, 2025
After a courageous, 14-year battle with breast cancer, Vickie Diane Chambers, 68, walked into the arms of Jesus on Monday, April 14, 2025. She was born on December 11, 1956, in Newark, Ohio, to Leroy William and Ruth Janell McGinnis. She was the eldest of five siblings.
In 1969, her mom and the kids moved from Ohio to Texas, settling in Abilene, where Vickie attended Cooper High School, graduating in spring of 1975. Then in 1975, Vickie met and married David Hernandez, Sr., where in the next few years her two most precious gifts in life, her children, were born. Her son, David Santos Hernandez, Jr. was born in May of 1978 and daughter Jennifer Rose Hernandez in January of 1980.
After becoming single again, while in Abilene, Vickie began working for Valley Faucets where she would meet John A. Chambers. They would be wed on June 24, 1983, and begin a relationship that would span 42 years. They moved to Oilton, Oklahoma in 1985 and finished raising their family there.
Vickie was a woman who loved life and had a generous and loving heart. She never withheld anything that she could possibly provide for someone in need. She loved her family fiercely with everything she had. The only thing she loved more, was her Savior, Jesus Christ. She was a faithful member of Oilton Freewill Baptist Church, where over the years she taught Sunday School, participated in ladies auxiliary, was part of the church choir and was also a girl scout leader. She always made sure that all the kids were faithfully attending church, so that the importance of a relationship with Jesus Christ was taught to them.
In 1990, Vickie began working at one of her most favorite jobs with a company called "Attic Babies". This company made collectable, one-of-a-kind, tea-stained rag dolls, each with a unique name and birth certificate. One of the reasons she loved her job most was that she got to work with her mom and her sister Judy. All three worked there together for several years, each having a special and unique job to perform for each doll to be completed. She would remain there for about 10 years before the factory closed.
One of her hobbies and amazing talents was in canning…a little bit of everything! She was constantly putting away fruits, vegetables, making jellies and jams, and she loved to gift them to family and friends! She was a compassionate woman who was quick to love, and also to forgive; those of us who have had the privilege to be a part of her life have all been impacted in some generous and special way.
She is preceded in death by her father, Leroy William McGinnis, mother, Ruth Janell McGinnis, father-in-law O.H. "Pat" Chambers, mother-in-law Alice Chambers, brother-in-law, Gary Irving Murch and one nephew, Michael Leroy McGinnis, II.
Vickie is survived by her husband of 42 years, John A. Chambers of Oilton, Oklahoma. She is also survived by her children, David Santos Hernandez, Jr. (Jessica) of Jennings, Oklahoma and Jennifer Rose Hernandez (David Burrows) of Cushing, Oklahoma, as well as her stepchildren Delton Chambers (Tammy) of New Mexico, Misty Densing (Bill) of Nevada, Robin Cook (Jeff) of California and Matthew Chambers (Jamie) of California. Also surviving her are siblings Michael Leroy McGinnis (Aimee) of San Angelo, Texas, Judy Ann Murch (Gary-deceased) of Cushing, Oklahoma, John Fitzgerald McGinnis (Melissa) of Clyde, Texas, and Cherri Donell Raines (Matt) of Abilene, Texas; 21 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and other friends and extended family. She also has two very special friends; childhood best friend, Terry Mills (Ohio), and best friend from Oilton, Terri Jo Venegas (Lubbock).
It is true what the Bible tells us in 1 Thessalonians 4:13…" brothers we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope." We are comforted in knowing that as we grieve for the loss of our precious Vickie, we rejoice in her victory!
Vickie's vibrant spirit and her enormous capacity for loving others will be deeply missed and leaves a hole that no one else can fill. But we rejoice knowing that she is in the arms of Jesus, and she is seeing her mom and dad, and lots of other loved ones that have gone on before us. If there is one message Vickie would definitely want to leave with all of her family and friends, it would be perfectly summed up in one verse. In John 3:16 the Bible tells us "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life." She would want to know that all of her friends and loved ones have that same relationship with Jesus Christ that she did, so they will know one day when death inevitably finds each of us, we will be in Heaven with her and with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
And we know that as Vickie entered into the presence of the Lord on Monday morning at 11:45am, she heard him say "well done, good and faithful servant……enter into the joy of your Lord"! (Matthew 25:23)
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home of Oilton. A celebration of Vickie's life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2025 at the Hope Free Will Baptist Church in Oilton, OK with Pastor Nathan Painter officiating.
